Once again the stage is set for an epic encounter, when World No. 2 Rafael Nadal will be up against sixteen Grand Slam titles winner Roger Federer in the semi-final of the 2012 Australian Open on Wednesday. Federer easily subdued lanky Argentinean Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarter-final match, while Nadal earned a came from behind victory over the 7th seed, Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic to set-up this clash, which is obviously the most anticipated match of the 2012 Australian Open.
This will be a 27th encounter between these two and Nadal leads the head-to-head with 17-9. In their last match, Federer proved too good handle for Nadal, as he edged past the Spaniard in just 61 minutes in the 2011 ATP World Tour finals with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Federer started off brilliantly in this tournament and edged past Alex Kudryavtsev, sailed into third round after he was gifted a walkover by Andreas Beck, then he tackled the lanky Ivo Karlovic well, subdued the home-favourite Bernard Tomic and then he beat Juan Martin Del Potro. The Swiss has not lost a set in the 2012 Australian Open so far.
Federer did not look near to his best in the last season. In fact, the Swiss could not produce some good results during the greater part of the last season. He also lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Wimbledon quarter-final after winning the first two sets. The Swiss did recover from the recurring seasonal jolts and finished 2011 on a high note after winning three titles in a row in Basel, Paris and London. Federer has been also enjoying a torrid form post US Open and has a 30-1 record since then. After winning his match against Del Potro, the Swiss quoted, "I'm moving well. I'm serving well. I'm hitting the ball clean. Today, I thought it was a very hot day with fast conditions. From now on basically it's only night sessions...It's going to be more athletic and tougher. I'm ready for that."

Nadal also started off brilliantly in this tournament and sailed into the quarter-finals without losing a set, but he was pushed to four-sets by Tomas Berdych in their quarter-final match. Though Nadal managed to win three titles in last season after losing to his compatriot David Ferrer in the Aussie Open quarter-finals – all his titles came on clay in 2011 including French Open triumph, but what happened after that was something incredible that took the best of tennis to a whole new level – it was the surge of Serbian Novak Djokovic. And, it has been continuing since then. Djokovic beat Nadal in six finals in 2011 and literally exposed many chinks in once-considered indefatigable Spaniard’s armour. When asked about his next match with Federer, the Spaniard asserted, "All the matches against Federer are special." He further added that "Every match is different, and I know I will be on court playing against probably the best player in the history of the sport. So obviously my only way to win is play aggressive and to play very well. That's what I'm going to try."
