watch Oregon State's Malcolm Agnew, the nation's leading rusher, doubtful for Wisconsin live

Anyone who follows this team has long since quit asking himself "what next?'' because it is now a given that something unusual / unfortunate / etc. is going to happen to Mike Riley's squad, depending on the day of the week.

So when freshman sensation tailback Malcolm Agnew felt a pop in his problematic right hamstring Tuesday, there was a suspicion we would see Agnew in street clothes this morning, limping into practice.

And sure enough, No. 35 has been shut down.

"I would term him as doubtful,'' said Riley.

Riley said Agnew was held out of "part of a practice'' in camp because his leg felt tight, "but yesterday, he pulled it.''

Agnew set an OSU freshman record with 223 yards in 33 carries in his first college game, a 29-28 OT loss to Sacramento State. ... the son of former NFL player and current St. Louis Rams' scout Ray Agnew was the first true freshman in the school's modern FB history to start the season opener at running back.

Riley said the Beavers may use greyshirt freshman Terron Ward as their first-down back at Wisconsin, then alternate Jordan Jenkins and Jovan Stevenson behind him depending on the situation. ... Riley also did not rule out giving fifth-year senior Ryan McCants some touches.

We'll have more on Agnew and our "As The World Turns'' update on the QB situation after practice.

OSU was without four starters vs. Sac State - DT Kevin Frahm, CB Brandon Hardin, WR James Rodgers, and TE Joe Halahuni. There were 14 players playing in their first game vs. Sac State.

Frahm returns for the 9 a.m. (Pacific time) Wisconsin game, but this team is far from being whole again. Riley doesn't know when that will happen, but he still talks hopefully of the "calvalry'' showing up at some point.

As for the black cloud that seems to hang over all things OSU football, Riley told me, "I try not to think about it.
